A murder suspect was shot dead by the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force at the Veterans Memorial while attempting to arrest Staff Sgt. said

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A murder suspect was shot dead Tuesday by members of the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force during an attempted arrest, Sgt. Ben Beall of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.

It happened around 11:25 in a Texas inn & Suites in the 12200 block of the Veterans Memorial when task force members were attempting to arrest the suspect, Beall said.

According to Beall, the task force had been approached by the Houston Police Department to help locate the fugitive.

The police department already had a murder warrant for the suspect.

Beall said someone in a van came to the inn to pick up the man.

Once officials established surveillance and saw the suspect exit the inn, they blocked him in the driveway, Beall said. That’s when officials said the suspect got out of the van and started running.

Beall said the suspect was armed and that’s when five members of the Gulf Coast Violent Offender Task Force, two Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies, two Texas Corrections Departments and a U.S. Marshal discharged their guns.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, Beall said.

The suspect’s pistol was recovered from the ditch where the man was found dead.

According to Beall, officials also used a Taser on the suspect and even put him in a bean bag.

Although the suspect’s name has not yet been released, Beall confirmed that he was a Hispanic male between the ages of 20 and 25.

As for the driver of the van, he is in custody and has been questioned, Beall said.

No law enforcement officers were injured, officials said.

A man who works at a nearby stock loan store said he saw the suspect exit the vehicle with a handgun. He said it appeared the man had tried to raise the gun but hadn’t had a chance before authorities opened fire.

The Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force is a group of law enforcement officials from different agencies. These officials specialize in finding fugitives usually wanted for very violent crimes.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit and Homicide Investigators are assisting in the investigation.
